What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is produced by the natural breakdown (decay) of uranium in soil, rock, and water.

Because it is a gas, it can easily move through the soil and enter your home through cracks in the foundation, gaps around service pipes, or floor drains. Once inside, it can become trapped and build up to dangerous levels.

The Dangers of Radon

Radon is a significant health risk because it is radioactive.

  • Lung Cancer: Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the general population, right after smoking.

  • Radioactive Particles: When you breathe in radon, radioactive particles can get trapped in your lungs. As these particles break down, they release small bursts of energy that damage lung tissue and can lead to DNA mutations.

  • Increased Risk for Smokers: While radon is dangerous for everyone, the risk of developing lung cancer is significantly higher for people who smoke and are also exposed to high levels of radon.

Radon Mitigation Systems

A radon depressurization system, or Active Soil Depressurization (ASD), is the most common and effective method to reduce radon levels in homes (80-99% reduction). It uses a fan to pull radon gas from under the foundation through a PVC pipe, venting it safely outside before it enters the living space.

  • How it Works: The system creates a vacuum beneath the slab (negative pressure), reversing the airflow so soil gases are sucked into the pipe instead of entering the house.

  • Types:

    • Sub-slab Depressurization: The standard method for basements/slab-on-grade.

    • Sump Pump System Connection: The existing sump pit is sealed and used as the extraction point.

    • Drain Tile Suction: Connects to existing foundation tiles.

We are C-NRPP (Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program) certification Radon Measurement and Radon Mitigation professional. We have successfully installed radon mitigation systems for hundreds of families in Calgary area.
